Why do I do what I do?
Why have I created mountains of rap music, writing, retreats, courses, workshops, & events continuously over the last 12 years?
Well, in order to…
Set the kids free.
This simple 4-word mantra hits deep in the luminous abyss of my heart.
It’s about the kids.
It’s about all children of this Earth and beyond.
It’s about creating a world where they’re free to thrive and blossom organically as the truth of what they are.
And not only the young ones…
It’s also about all of our inner children.
Including my own inner child.
It’s about setting all the (inner) kids free.
I love children.
Christ said, “Ye must become like little children to enter the Kingdom of Heaven.”
For me the child-spirit in all of us is akin to the master keystone that unlocks the gorgeousness of life.
The ever innocent child-heart in all of us is our most direct portal to Divinity.
Letting the Light In
The glory of God is full-on at all times. We are always living in the fullness of ever-morphing artistry.
Each nanosecond is a never-before-seen master artwork from the heartful imagination of the Creator.
The question is:
Are we letting that in?
Are we present to that miraculousness?
Are we letting ourselves feel and know that we all already have it all?
Are we viscerally feeling the way in which NOW is worth more than all the money in the world?
The simple fact of being alive and experiencing this marvelous tapestry of being…
The children know.
The inner child knows.
The child-spirit is fully in contact with the Aliveness of Now.
For me the child-spirit evokes uninhibited life force, primal potency, pure flow, natural intelligence, whimsical play, spontaneous creation, inspired desire, divine rejuvenation, effortless thanksgiving, original innocence, and full affirmation of the adventure of life.
This is why good ol’ uncle Nietzsche invoked the spirit of the child as his pinnacle metamorphosis of the soul: In Thus Spake Zarathustra, it is the child who is able to deliver the sacred “Yes” to the dance of life, igniting as a self-propelled wheel of spontaneous creative life force.
For the kids.
Many things we do to children on this planet are abhorrent and disgraceful.
Our treatment of children is a direct reflection of our cut-off-ness from our own inner children.
This is why my work is so fundamentally rooted in re-establishing a healing, uplifting connection to the inner child.
This thread weaves through everything I do: Men’s work, retreat facilitation, writing, music, coaching, space-holding, teaching, fatherhood, husbandhood, friendship, and so on.
One of the best commitments I ever made is my current 1-year commitment to—with few exceptions—not use digital devices around my 3-year-old daughter. I’ll likely extend this to 5 or 10 years, or perhaps the rest of my life. It feels vitally important for cultivating the depth of loving presence I want to share with her. I’m not perfect at it, but the commitment has greatly helped.
My deepest ‘why’ as a leader of men’s work is to help men restore their connection to the aliveness, heart, creativity, inspiration, & innocence of their own inner child—and in doing so, to become the kind of men who will be loving fathers to the next generation of children.
The child-spirit is the portal.
The child-spirit is the key.
People run wild in a thousand directions searching desperately for some lost source of meaning, purpose, aliveness, and connection to life…
And all long, it’s within them.
It’s their own inner child, waiting patiently for them to reopen a line of communication.
Waiting patiently for them to listen.
The child within is speaking to us.
Ever whispering, ever beckoning.
Yet we are often so busy that we do not hear.
We closed ourselves off to the child’s fragile heart long ago.
And that is why our world is in disarray.
We were told the child’s heart was not ‘practical’ and would not lead to ‘success.’
Yet without the child-spirit, ‘success’ is a dead thing.
Without aliveness, life is a dead thing.
Resurrect the child.
So, consider this an invitation to unearth the child within.
She is there.
He is waiting.
Jung wrote, “What did you do as a child that made the hours pass like minutes? Therein lies the key to your earthly pursuits.”
We begin to rediscover the child by playfully engaging in the activities we used to love as children: Being in nature, adventuring, singing, dancing, imagining, making art, and so on.
We rediscover the child by slowing down, being still, and speaking to her.
Talking to him.
Letting her know we’re there.
Asking if we can listen to him.
Asking what she needs from us.
Asking what messages he has for us.
Listening.
Offering her a hug.
Letting him know that he is safe and he is loved.
Letting her know we are an adult now and we will protect her.
Being the caring father for our own inner boy.
Being the kind mother for our own inner girl.
Holding space and being present, like a good parent does.
A prayer for all children and inner children.
May all children be happy and free.
May our inner children be happy and free.
May all children know they are loved.
May our inner children know they are loved.
May all children feel safe to blossom as the truth of what they are.
May our inner children feel safe to blossom as the truth of what they are.
May all children play and create with spontaneous grace and innocence.
May our inner children play and create with spontaneous grace and innocence.
May the hearts of all children be treasured as more precious than all the gold in the world.
May the hearts of our inner children be treasured as more precious than all the gold in the world.
May all children fly free to beautify this world for the glory of Goddess.
May all forgotten inner children rise phoenix-like from the ashes to fly free and beautify this world for the glory of the Most High.
May all children and inner children know they can trust Life.
May all children and inner children know they are unconditionally loved by God.
